TRACK:4 BREAST PATHOLOGY
What are the symptoms of breast cancer?
Breast cancer symptoms can vary, and some people with
breast cancer may not experience any noticeable symptoms in the early stages.
Regular breast self-exams, clinical breast exams by healthcare professionals,
and mammograms are crucial for early detection. Here are some common symptoms
and signs of breast cancer:
- Lump or Mass: The most common symptom is the
presence of a lump or thickening in the breast or underarm. However, not
all lumps are cancerous.
- Changes in Breast Size or Shape: Unexplained
changes in the size or shape of the breast may be a sign of breast cancer.
- Changes in Skin Texture: Skin changes, such as redness,
dimpling, or puckering, on the breast's surface can be a symptom.
- Changes in the Nipple: This may include nipple
inversion (turning inward), a change in direction, or an unusual
discharge, such as blood.
- Breast Pain or Discomfort: While breast pain is not usually
a common symptom of breast cancer, it can sometimes be associated with the
disease.
- Skin Changes on the Breast or Areola: Unexplained
changes in the skin, such as peeling or flaking, may be a symptom.
- Nipple Changes: Changes in the
appearance of the nipple, such as it becoming flattened, inverted, or
changing direction.
It's important to note that many of these symptoms can be
caused by conditions other than breast cancer. For instance, benign
(non-cancerous) breast conditions or infections may also produce similar
symptoms. However, if you notice any unusual changes in your breasts, it's
essential to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation.
Additionally, routine screenings, such as mammograms, are
crucial for detecting breast cancer in its early stages, often before symptoms
become apparent. Early detection significantly increases the chances of
successful treatment and a positive outcome. If you have concerns about breast
cancer or notice any changes in your breasts, it is advisable to seek prompt
medical attention for a proper evaluation.

Cancer treatments
Breast cancer treatment is highly individualized and
depends on several factors, including the type and stage of cancer, the
presence of specific biomarkers, and the overall health of the patient.
Treatment plans often involve a combination of different modalities. Here are
common breast cancer treatments:
- Surgery: Lumpectomy
(Breast-Conserving Surgery): Removal of the tumor and a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue.
Mastectomy: Removal of the entire breast. This can be total (removal of the entire breast), partial (removal of part of the breast), or radical (removal of the breast, underlying chest muscles, and some lymph nodes). - Radiation Therapy:
External Beam Radiation: High-energy beams target the breast or the area where the tumor was removed to destroy remaining cancer cells.
Internal Radiation (Brachytherapy): Radioactive material is placed near or directly into the tumor site. - Chemotherapy:
Systemic Treatment: Drugs circulate throughout the body to kill or inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy: Administered before surgery to shrink tumors.
Adjuvant Chemotherapy: Given after surgery to eliminate remaining cancer cells. - Hormone Therapy:For hormone receptor-positive
breast cancers.
Tamoxifen: Blocks estrogen receptors.
Aromatase Inhibitors: Suppress the production of estrogen. - Targeted Therapy:
Trastuzumab (Herceptin): Targets HER2-positive breast cancers.
Other Targeted Drugs: Pertuzumab, ado-trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1), and others, depending on the specific molecular characteristics of the cancer. - Immunotherapy:Under
investigation in clinical trials for breast cancer treatment.
- Lymph Node Surgery:
Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy: Removal of a few lymph nodes to check for cancer spread.
Axillary Lymph Node Dissection: Removal of more lymph nodes if cancer has spread. - Reconstructive Surgery:For individuals
who undergo mastectomy, reconstructive surgery can be an option to restore
the breast's appearance.
- Clinical Trials: Participation
in clinical trials may be considered, offering access to new and
innovative treatments.
- Palliative Care: Focuses on relieving symptoms
and improving the quality of life, particularly in advanced stages of
cancer.
The choice of treatment depends on factors such as the
cancer's characteristics, stage, and the patient's overall health. Treatment
plans are often discussed in a multidisciplinary team setting, involving
oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, nurses, and other specialists.
It's crucial for patients to have open communication with their healthcare
team, ask questions, and actively participate in decisions about their
treatment.
