The breast is composed of a variety of tissues, from extremely fatty tissue to extremely dense tissue. There is a network of lobes within this tissue. Each lobe is composed of tiny lobules tube-like structures that house milk glands. Milk is transported from the lobes to the nipple via tiny ducts that connect the glands, lobules, and lobes. The areola, the darker region that encircles the nipple, contains the nipple in the center.

Healthy cells in the breast begin to alter and expand out of control to form a tumor, which is a mass or sheet of cells. A tumor may be benign or malignant. Malignant refers to the ability of a cancerous tumor to develop and metastasize to different body regions. A benign tumor is still growing and has not yet spread.

Breast Pathology can spread through the blood vessels and/or lymph nodes to places including the bones, lungs, liver, and brain, though it most frequently travels to surrounding lymph nodes, in which case it is still regarded as a local or regional disease. The most advanced stage of the disease is known as metastatic or stage IV breast pathology.

Types of Breast Cancer / Pathology

Breast pathology can either be invasive or not. When breast cancer invades nearby tissues or distant organs, it is said to be invasive. Non-invasive breast cancer does not spread past the milk ducts of breast lobules.

a situs ductal carcinoma (DCIS). This non-invasive malignancy (stage 0) is contained to the duct alone and has not spread outside.

 

Infiltrating or invasive ductal carcinoma. This malignancy has migrated beyond the ducts or lobules.

 

lobular cancer with invasion. Breast cancer that has migrated outside of the ducts or lobules is a less frequent kind.

Breast cancers are typically ductal or lobular epithelial tumours. Most individuals have an asymptomatic mass found during a checkup or screening mammogram when they first arrive. Biopsy is used to confirm the diagnosis. The most common forms of treatment include surgical excision, frequently combined with radiation therapy, adjuvant chemotherapy, and endocrine therapy.
