 DISEASE DIAGNOSIS

Histopathologists offer a cancer diagnostic service. They handle the cells and tissues that have been removed from suspicious "lumps and bumps," determine the nature of the abnormality, and, if the abnormality is malignant, inform the clinician about the type of cancer, its grade, and, in some cases, whether the cancer is responsive to specific treatments.

Biopsy tissue can now be acquired from previously inaccessible places, such as the pancreas or retroperitoneum, thanks to improved imaging techniques.

The membrane that lines the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum). After processing tissue, usually over night, tissue is next inspected under a microscope. With innovative methods like fluorescence in-situ hybridization, pathologists are setting the pace for the quickly evolving field of molecular pathology.

THE HISTOPATHOLOGIST'S PURPOSE

Many histopathologists specialise on particular organs, such as the liver or skin, and dissect (or "chop up" or "trim") tissues on a daily basis in order to view them under a microscope. Large specimens, including post-operative bowel or breast samples, are dissected to identify the best regions for microscopic examination. A lot of histopathologists also have teaching and research responsibilities in addition to writing reports on specimens and consulting literature (including previous and ongoing research findings).

As an illustration, istopathologists may perform procedures like fine needle aspiration in head and neck or breast clinics. They also interact directly with patients.
