Call for Paper Track: 8 Surgical Pathology

12th Emirates Pathology & Digital Pathology Conference on December 21-23, 2022 in Dubai, UAE

In order to identify a condition and choose a course of treatment, surgical pathology is the examination of tissues taken from living patients during surgery. The surgical pathologist frequently offers consultation services in a range of organ systems and medical subspecialties. Surgical pathologists offer second opinions or diagnostic information. For instance, a surgical pathologist's examination of the tissues removed during surgery can assist the surgeon in deciding whether or not to remove lymph nodes under the arm as well when performing breast cancer surgery.

Both a visual examination of the tissue with the unaided eye and a microscopic examination of processed tissue are included in surgical pathology. The examination of tissue and cell samples using new techniques involves molecular diagnostics (DNA/RNA analysis). Analyzing blood proteins and DNA is necessary for this. The capability to: is one of the uses of the technology.

·         Separate benign (noncancerous) from malignant (cancerous) white blood cells.

·         Identify early genetic alterations that may lead to cancer

·         Find infectious organisms in bodily tissues

Surgical pathology specimens

A biopsy is a small sample of tissue that is taken primarily for surgical pathology analysis, most frequently to provide a conclusive diagnosis. Core biopsies, which are collected with the aid of large-bore needles and occasionally with the aid of radiological procedures like ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI, for that matter. Contrary to fine-needle aspiration specimens, which are examined using cytopathology methods, core biopsies preserve tissue architecture. Excisional biopsies are similar to therapeutic surgical resections in that they remove the complete lesion, whereas incisional biopsies are obtained through diagnostic surgical procedures that remove a portion of a worrisome lesion. Skin blemishes and gastrointestinal polyps are frequently the subject of excisional biopsies. The analysis of a biopsy by a pathologist is crucial for evaluating whether a tumour is benign or malignant. The pathologist can distinguish between various types and grades of cancer as well as assess the activity of particular molecular pathways in the tumour.

This information is crucial for determining the patient's prognosis and the most effective course of treatment. Inflammatory, infectious, or idiopathic conditions of the skin and gastrointestinal system, to name just a few, are just a few of the conditions that can be diagnosed with biopsies in addition to cancer.

The therapeutic surgical removal of an entire diseased region or organ yields the specimens used in surgical resection procedures (and occasionally multiple organs). These treatments are frequently

meant to be the final surgical treatment for a condition for which the diagnosis is already known or is quite likely. However, the pathological examination of these tissues is crucial for validating the initial diagnosis.

Staging the extent of malignant disease, determining whether or not the entire diseased area was removed (a process known as "determination of the surgical margin", frequently using frozen section), detecting the presence of unsuspected concurrent diseases, and providing information for postoperative treatment, such as adjuvant chemotherapy in the case of cancer.
