Track 1: Pathology

What is pathology?
Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of diseases. It focuses on understanding the nature and causes of diseases, as well as the structural and functional changes that occur in tissues and organs as a result of these diseases. Pathologists, medical professionals specialized in pathology, play a crucial role in diagnosing illnesses, guiding treatment decisions, and understanding the underlying mechanisms of various health conditions.

Pathology encompasses several sub-disciplines, including:

1. Anatomic Pathology: This branch involves the examination of tissues, organs, and whole bodies through techniques such as autopsies, biopsies, and surgical pathology. It aims to identify and understand the structural changes associated with diseases.

2. Clinical Pathology (or Laboratory Medicine): This branch focuses on the analysis of body fluids (blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.) and other samples to diagnose and monitor diseases. It includes areas such as clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and immunology.

3. Forensic Pathology:

This specialty deals with the investigation of sudden, unexpected, or suspicious deaths. Forensic pathologists determine the cause and manner of death, often working closely with legal authorities.

Pathologists use various techniques, including microscopy, molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, and advanced imaging, to examine tissues and specimens. The information obtained through pathology is crucial for clinicians to make accurate diagnoses, prognoses, and treatment plans for patients.

What Does a Pathologist do?

A pathologist is a doctor who analyses body parts and bodily tissues. He or she is also accountable for carrying out laboratory testing. A pathologist is a crucial part of the treatment team who assists other medical professionals in making diagnosis.

Additionally, a pathologist will evaluate a tissue biopsy to determine whether it is cancerous or benign, and they will then communicate their findings to your primary care physician. Some pathologists are experts in genetic testing, which can, for instance, decide the best course of action for specific cancer kinds.

Additionally, pathologists do autopsies, which not only reveal the cause of death but may also reveal more details regarding the genetic development of a disease. This finding may enable family members to adopt preventive measures for their own health and may help researchers create new medicines.
