Call for Paper Track: 19 head and neck pathology
12th Emirates Pathology & Digital Pathology Conference on December 21-23, 2022 in Dubai, UAE
What is head and neck
pathology?
Diagnoses are made for patients with malignant tumours,
non-cancerous disease, infections, inflammations, and other disorders affecting
the head and neck by head and neck pathology.
Numerous disorders can affect the head and neck areas.
Many significant organs and structures can be found in these areas, including:
- thyroid
- oral
cavity
- tongue
- larynx
- salivary
glands
Thyroid
A medical problem that prevents your
thyroid from producing the appropriate amount of hormones is known as thyroid
illness. Correctly, your thyroid produces the hormones necessary to keep your
body operating normally. Your body uses energy too quickly when the thyroid
produces excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. It is known as hyperthyroidism.
A little gland called the thyroid is found near the front of
the neck, around the windpipe (trachea). It has two broad wings that wrap
around the side of your throat and is fashioned like a butterfly with a smaller
centre. a gland, the thyroid is. Your body contains glands, which produce and
release compounds that aid various bodily functions. Your thyroid produces
hormones that assist in regulating a number of important bodily processes. More

Oral cavity
The upper part of the aerodigestive tract
is made up of the mouth cavity and oropharynx. Because pathologic processes
appear differently in these two locations, they also have different prognoses
and histologic grades. The explanation of the sublingual and submandibular
areas is followed by a discussion of the normal architecture of the mouth
cavity, vestibule, and oral cavity proper. The variety of pathologic processes
that take place in various areas are then described,
The most prevalent type of oral cancer,
lip cancer, usually affects men. It is separated into two types: basal cells
and squamous cells. Squamous cells, the thin, flat cells that line the lips and
mouth, are where the most prevalent type of lip cancer develops.

tongue
Oropharyngeal cancer and oral cancer are
the two main kinds of cancer that affect the tongue. The tongue is divided into
two halves. The majority of it is the portion that you can freely move and
generally view. Oral cancer is the conventional name for cancer that develops
in this area of the tongue.
Geographic tongue symptoms and signs can
include: On the top or side of your tongue, there are smooth, red, irregularly
shaped patches (lesions). a lesion's location, size, or shape changing
frequently. Some people experience discomfort, pain, or a burning feeling after
consuming meals that are spicy or acidic.

Larynx
Laryngeal carcinoma is distinguished on
gross pathology by flattened plaques, mucosal ulceration, and elevated borders
of the lesion. Spindle cells, basaloid cells, and nuclear atypia are typical
findings of laryngeal cancer on microscopic histopathological investigation.
Viral infections, vocal cord tension, and
other conditions can all cause laryngeal problems. the vocal cords, epiglottis,
and throat. encompass specific disorders. throat cancer. People may have
trouble breathing or swallowing, a lump in their throat, or a hoarse voice.
Tumors that start in the salivary glands
grow abnormally and are known as salivary gland tumours. Rare cancers of the
salivary glands

salivary glands
Saliva is produced by salivary glands and
maintains strong teeth while also assisting in digestion and keeping your mouth
wet. Three pairs of large salivary glands—the parotid, sublingual, and
submandibular—are located under and behind your jaw. There are numerous other
microscopic salivary glands in your lips, cheeks, mouth, and throat.
Any salivary gland in your body can start
a salivary gland tumour. The majority are benign (non-cancerous), although they
can occasionally be malignant. The parotid glands are where most salivary gland
tumours are found.
Early in the 1900s, Head and Neck Pathology (HNP) started to
emerge consistently after two centuries of intermittent occurrence. Two papers
published in the 1930s listed more than a thousand references on head and neck
tumours, with one citing 450 papers on the sinonasal region (1) and the other
providing 600 references on the salivary glands (2). Oral pathologists have
made substantial contributions to HNP. Only a few people can be honoured here
because their history is a significant story in and of itself. This overview of
the history of HNP is approached by examining the timelines of a few chosen and
representative issues, with a focus on relevant publications and organisations
where pathologists with expertise in HNP practised. Salivary glands are taken
into consideration independently.

Head and Neck Pathology prior to 1900
The first "polyp" is thought to have been removed
around 1860 using one of the early, albeit primitive, laryngoscopes (3). An
1871 publication on 100 consecutive biopsies by English laryngologist Morell
Mackenzie included several illustrations of the microscopic views (4). The
diagnosis of diseases using biopsies was novel in the late 1800s. Looking at
outstanding, intricate drawings of microscopic images and their legends shows
that it was a challenging exercise. For instance, there were a variety of microscopic
characteristics that were thought to be typical of common squamous carcinoma.
Face tissue and tangential sections of cytologically normal epithelium were
particularly susceptible to cancer misdiagnosis.
Many benign and malignant tumours, along with other histologic diseases, were initially described during this time.
The identification of neoplasms like rhabdomyosarcoma, myoblastoma (granular cell tumours), and subtypes of salivary gland tumours as well as the description of noncancerous lesions like Wegener's granulomatosis are fascinating and frequently confusing tales in and of themselves.
