What is the Role of Pathology? Learn more to attend the CME/CPD accredited 13EPUCG2023 in Dubai, UAE.
The field of medicine called pathology offers patients and clinicians diagnostic data. It affects almost every facet of patient care, from cancer diagnosis to the management of chronic diseases through precise laboratory testing.
A doctor who’s clinical
and research interests centre on human illness is called a pathologist. The
duties of pathologists differ to some extent depending on their area of
specialisation, according to Clinical Pathology, which claims that the field
includes a number of specialties. These specialty fields include dermatopathology,
molecular genetic pathology, immunopathology, haematology pathology, neuropathology, paediatric pathology, chemical
pathology, cytopathology, forensic pathology, blood banking and transfusion pathology, and
immunopathology.
Environment at Work:
The laboratory is the primary setting for
pathologists. The purpose of pathology is to locate and identify the origins of
illnesses and infections. Pathologists run tests on tissue samples, blood
samples, and other bodily fluid samples. Pathologists play a crucial role in
not only supervising the tests but also interpreting the results. For example,
a pathologist with expertise in microbiology might be able to pinpoint the microorganism responsible for an infection. In order
to ensure that patients receive the proper supply
of blood, pathologists frequently manage blood supplies. Additionally,
pathologists perform autopsies as needed to ascertain the cause of death.
Pathology Techniques:
Pathologists are essential to the care of patients because of their
knowledge of the lab. Pathologists collaborate with other doctors working on a
case to determine the best course of treatment. They also help choose the right
tests for a patient and interpret the results. Pathologists
offer a crucial viewpoint when a group of doctors is thinking about a patient's
case and the appropriate care that should be provided because of their profound
understanding of disease and the depth of their expertise in evaluating test
results.
Pathology's Place in Research:
Pathologists are natural researchers due to their familiarity with the
lab, the human body, and the disease world. Pathologists frequently focus their
research on issues relating to the diagnosis of disease, including initiatives
to advance the techniques they employ to diagnose patients. This research may
lead to the development of new diagnostic procedures or technological
advancements that improve the methods currently used in labs to diagnose
patients' conditions. According to Clinical Pathology, there are more than
2,000 lab tests used for diagnosis.
Teaching and Lifelong Learning:
In pathology,
as in the majority of medical specialties, emphasis
is placed on teaching and ongoing education. Whether it's sharing their knowledge
with other pathologists at conferences or working with medical students in a
university setting, many pathologists
choose to teach others in their field. Because of the quick advancements in science and technology, pathologists need to
stay up to date on the latest research. Pathologists must renew their
certifications every ten years under pathology. Pathologists enrol in
continuing education courses as a requirement for certification.
